Frequently asked questions

What is an FDA warning letter?

It is FDA's written notice to a company that it found significant violations of the laws FDA enforces, usually after an inspection or a review of products, labels or a website. The letter lists the violations and asks the company to explain how it will correct them. Warning letters are advisory and carry no penalty on their own, but FDA can follow up with enforcement such as a seizure, an injunction or an import alert if the problems are not fixed.

How long does a company have to respond?

Usually 15 working days. The letter asks for a written reply that describes the corrections made and the steps taken to keep the violations from happening again.

What is the difference between a Form 483 and a warning letter?

A Form FDA 483 lists the inspectors' observations at the end of an inspection. A warning letter comes later, if FDA decides the violations are significant and the company's response did not resolve them. Not every 483 leads to a warning letter.

How soon after it is issued does FDA publish a letter?

FDA posts letters after removing confidential information. Across the 500 most recent letters, the median gap between the date on the letter and the date FDA posted it was 12 days.

How often is this page updated?

Every day. We read FDA's public warning letter index each morning and list the newest letters first. Each company name links to the full letter on fda.gov.

Can I get alerts for letters about my product category?

Yes. Use the alert box on this page to say what you care about, such as a product type, a violation or a competitor's name, and WebMonitor emails you when a new letter matches. Alerts run on paid plans from $29 a month.

How this works

Every morning we read FDA's public warning letter index and list the 250 most recent letters, newest first. Company names link to the full letter on fda.gov, which is the official source. WebMonitor is not affiliated with FDA. To watch other regulator pages the same way, see regulatory compliance monitoring.
